Hélène Létourneau-Donnelly has been a pivotal figure at The Ottawa Hospital as a healthcare provider, donor, and volunteer. Her commitment to helping others stems from her parents’ influence, instilling in her the value of improving lives regardless of circumstances.
Soon after graduating in 1959, she began her nursing career and quickly moved into leadership roles within the hospital, ultimately serving as the one of the Directors of Nursing at the Civic for the next 27 years. Throughout her tenure, Hélène spearheaded groundbreaking initiatives, including pioneering programs like the Comprehensive Surgical Day Care, Ottawa’s first Triage Nurse Program in Emergency, and the establishment of the city’s first Operating Room Technician Course.
Even amidst personal health challenges, such as her first battle with breast cancer in 2007 followed by a second in 2022, she remained resolute in her mission to enhance patient care. Hélène is steadfast in her support of women’s health through the Shirley E. Greenberg Women’s Health Centre and the Rose Ages Breast Health Centre, which has a room named after her.
Hélène’s legacy extends beyond her professional achievements; she is celebrated for her philanthropy and unwavering dedication to improving healthcare outcomes. Her work has left an indelible mark on The Ottawa Hospital, embodying its commitment to world-class care and compassion.
