The Indigenous Employee Network (IEN) at The Ottawa Hospital, established in 2021, is a vital initiative fostering belonging and connection among self-declared First Nations, Inuit, and Métis employees, along with their allies. It is a place of safety where Indigenous employees and allies come together to share experiences, celebrate culture, and advocate for inclusion and change at TOH.
Working alongside the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Circle, which guides The Ottawa Hospital’s reconciliation efforts, the IEN emphasizes the meaningful involvement of Indigenous Peoples. The Circle, composed of First Nation, Inuit, and Métis leaders, physicians, and community members, provides essential insights for building a future focused on Indigenous health and healing.
“It is critical to bring collective First Nation, Inuit, and Métis voices to the table,” says Marion Crowe, the first Indigenous appointment to The Ottawa Hospital Board of Governors who Co-Chairs the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Circle with Dr. Elaine Kilabuk and Dr. Jason McVicar. “Truth must come before reconciliation, and The Circle ensures the truths of Indigenous Peoples guide the hospital toward actions that create a space where all patients and their families feel safe, cared for, and respected.”
Given the traumatic legacy of residential schools and inequalities in healthcare services, IEN provides a vehicle for discussion, learning and support on the journey toward reconciliation.
