My Civic Moment happened on August 10, 1966 when the Heron Road bridge collapsed while under construction and many injured workers were hospitalized at the Civic. I was a patient there, having given birth 2 days earlier. (Those were the days when the duration of hospital stay after giving birth was 1 week.) Patients in semi-private rooms without a roommate at the time were doubled up in order to create rooms for the injured workers. The following day my nurse told me that one of the injured workers awoke from a coma and asked her “Where am I?” Her response caused him to seriously wake up when he heard “You’re in the maternity ward.” It was a humorous moment in an otherwise tragic situation, remembered 58 years later.
