One l-o-n-g moment at the Civic stands out in my memory. In 1962, as a 15-year-old, I spent 3 weeks in the Isolation Ward with hepatitis picked up while swimming in a polluted river. Visitors were not allowed, but as the only occupant of the ward I got plenty of attention — which helped considerably to compensate for the misery of the obligatory fat-free diet. The regular company of student nurses and the freedom to read all night long more than made up for the lack of visitors and took the sting of isolation out of the Isolation Ward.
