MOMENT 2 Colin White cut no subtitles

Local artist Colin White had his job cut out for him when he was hired to capture the exterior of the Civic, done with pencil on paper.

He’s accrued years of experience sketching urban buildings and landscapes but none of his subject matter has been as large and detailed as the hospital’s Civic Campus. “Just the size of it is a challenge,” says Colin. “It’s a large building; it’s not just a two-storey house.”

Yet, it’s a project he’s proud to have undertaken. “It’s certainly a privilege to be working on it and to be capturing a building of historical significance for the city,” says Colin.

In the original building, two million bricks were used, along with 250,000 terra cotta blocks. It was calculated that there were seven miles of walls.

“It’s very interesting that the Civic Hospital was built in response to the flu pandemic 100 years ago, and here we are coming out of another pandemic, and now paying tribute to this building,” explains Colin.

And now, on the heels of another pandemic, construction is underway to build a new hospital campus — a project that will completely reshape healthcare for our region. Learn more.
