OUTER SPACE TRAVEL
USA, Canada, Japan, Europe
Researchers at The Ottawa Hospital are leading a study on the International Space Station, which is providing world-first insights into how space travel affects astronaut bone marrow and blood cells.
CAR-T IMMUNOTHERAPY
In partnership with BC Cancer, we are leading the first made-in-Canada CAR-T cell research program and clinical trial. CAR-T therapy is a highly personalized form of cancer immunotherapy that is proving to be a game-changer. We also lead Canada’s Immunotherapy Network, BioCanRx.
REGENERATIVE MEDICINE
We are a global pioneer in using stem cell transplantation to “reset” the immune system in people with severe MS. This groundbreaking treatment, is now a standard of care across North America. We are also home to Canada’s Stem Cell Network, the Sprott Centre for Stem Cell Research and the Sinclair Centre for Regenerative Medicine.
TUBERCULOSIS
Our researchers are working with Nunavut Tunngavik and the Government of Nunavut on research projects to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis which is at least 300 times more common among Inuit in Nunavut compared to the rest of Canada.
VACCINE AND BIOMANUFACTURING
Our Biotherapeutics Manufacturing Centre is the most experienced and successful facility of its kind. We are collborating across Canada, North America, Europe and Asia to develop and manufacture products like vaccines, cancer-fighting viruses, gene therapies, stem cell therapies and more.
PARKINSON'S
We are working with multiple centres across Europe (Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Czech Republic) to pilot a personalized approach for Parkinson's care.

BLOOD CLOTS
Researchers at The Ottawa Hospital co-lead the Canadian Venous Thromboembolism Research Network (CanVECTOR) together with colleagues in Montreal. This network brings 28 research centres across the country together to determine the best approaches for treatment and prevention of dangerous blood clots in the legs and lungs.
RETHINKING CLINICAL TRIALS
We are leading the largest pragmatic cancer clinical trials program in Canada (REaCT), with more than 4,000 patients participating in 24 clinical trials at 16 centres in Canada.
EMERGENCY MEDICINE
If you’ve ever been treated in an emergency department anywhere in the world, chances are your healthcare provider used a clinical decision rule developed at The Ottawa Hospital to help diagnose you. In fact, three of the top five rules recommended for U.S. emergency departments were developed in Ottawa.
COVID-19
We co-lead the award-winning COVID Evidence Network (COVID-END), which produces reliable and timely COVID-19 evidence summaries for decision makers in more than 30 countries in North America, South America, Africa, Europe and Asia.

ALZHEIMER'S
We are playing a major role in a massive collaborative research incubator that is testing non-drug, care-based interventions for Alzheimer’s and dementia.
STROKE
We are working with colleagues from the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) to help predict which ischemic stroke patients would benefit the most from a clot-busting drug. The findings from this study will change how stroke doctors across Canada, and around the world, make treatment decisions.
HIV
We co-lead the CanCURE research network, which aims to eliminate HIV-infected cells that can hide from current treatments. This research has the potential to result in a true cure for HIV.
USING BIG DATA TO HELP THE SMALLEST BABIES
We are working with colleagues in Kenya, Uganda and around the world to develop a simple blood test and mathematical model to accurately identify preterm babies without ultrasound in low-resource countries.

It’s time to take research to unprecedented heights
In the last 20 years, we’ve pushed the boundaries of healthcare and research — changing and saving lives all over the world.
Our experts predict more research and clinical breakthroughs will happen in the next ten years than have happened over the last 50. And with your help, more of them will happen here at our hospital.
This means improved treatments and novel therapies — and greater hope for us all.
