USA, Canada, Japan, Europe
Researchers at The Ottawa Hospital are leading a research in outer space, which is providing world-first insights into how space travel affects astronaut bone marrow and blood cells.

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE
We are a global pioneer in using stem cell transplantation to “reset” the immune system in people with severe MS. This groundbreaking treatment, is now a standard of care across North America. We also founded Canada’s Stem Cell Network, and we are home to the Sprott Centre for Stem Cell Research and the Sinclair Centre for Regenerative Medicine.
TUBERCULOSIS
Our researchers are working with Nunavut Tunngavik and the Government of Nunavut on research projects to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis which is at least 300 times more common among Inuit in Nunavut compared to the rest of Canada.
VACCINE AND BIOMANUFACTURING
Our Biotherapeutics Manufacturing Centre is the most experienced and successful facility of its kind. We are collborating across Canada, North America, Europe and Asia to develop and manufacture products like vaccines, cancer-fighting viruses, gene therapies, stem cell therapies and more.
PARKINSON'S
Could Parkinson’s disease start in the nose? We are leading an international research effort to find out, and the answer could help with the development of new treatments. We have also worked with multiple centres across Europe to develop a personalized approach for Parkinson’s care.

BLOOD CLOTS
Researchers at The Ottawa Hospital co-lead the Canadian Venous Thromboembolism Research Network (CanVECTOR) together with colleagues in Montreal. This network brings 28 research centres across the country together to determine the best approaches for treatment and prevention of dangerous blood clots in the legs and lungs. Researchers at The Ottawa Hospital also led the creation of INVENT, the International Network of Venous Thromboembolism Research Networks, gathering researchers from 10 countries in America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
RETHINKING CLINICAL TRIALS
We are leading the largest pragmatic cancer clinical trials program in Canada (REaCT), with more than 4,000 patients participating in 24 clinical trials at 16 centres in Canada.
EMERGENCY MEDICINE
If you’ve ever been treated in an emergency department anywhere in the world, chances are your healthcare provider used a clinical decision rule developed at The Ottawa Hospital to help diagnose you. In fact, three of the top five rules recommended for U.S. emergency departments were developed in Ottawa.
ALZHEIMER'S
We are playing a major role in a massive collaborative research incubator that is testing non-drug, care-based interventions for Alzheimer’s and dementia.
STROKE
We are working with colleagues around the world to trial the first medication that limits damage from a brain hemorrhage. At the same time, we are testing new clot-busting medications in combination with neuroprotectants for treating ischemic stroke in the emergency department. The findings from these studies will change how stroke is treated across Canada, and around the world.
HIV
We co-lead the CanCURE research network, which aims to eliminate HIV-infected cells that can hide from current treatments. This research has the potential to result in a true cure for HIV.
MENTAL HEALTH
Our mental health team is involved in numerous international collaborations in areas such as bipolar disorder, suicide prevention, depression, psychosis, schizophrenia, psychopharmacology, and eating disorders. These efforts span the full spectrum of biomedical research, from basic science to observational science to clinical trials and knowledge translation.

It’s time to take research to unprecedented heights
In the last 20 years, we’ve pushed the boundaries of healthcare and research — changing and saving lives all over the world.
Our experts predict more research and clinical breakthroughs will happen in the next ten years than have happened over the last 50. And with your help, more of them will happen here at our hospital.
This means improved treatments and novel therapies — and greater hope for us all.
