Fueled with energy and inspiration, close to 700 cyclists hit the streets of Ottawa Sunday for THE RIDE, powered by Mattamy Homes. They had one common goal in mind; to help fund some of the best research in the world taking place at The Ottawa Hospital. From recreational to avid cyclists, each RIDE participant powered through 50KM or 117KM routes.
With more than $1.03 million raised this year, THE RIDE has now raised more than $12 million for research at The Ottawa Hospital. It’s a staggering investment which helps make The Ottawa Hospital one of the top five research hospitals in Canada. Our researchers are investigating every major disease. Funds raised through THE RIDE will support research in cancer, neuromuscular diseases, heart disease, stroke and more.
Tim Kluke, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, says to see an increase in the number of riders over last year, shows our community understands the critical work being done by our researchers. “Thanks to residents of Ottawa, researchers at The Ottawa Hospital are making new discoveries every day and taking those discoveries from the bench to the bed side. It’s those clinical trials which is one of our unique strengths and is making a difference in the lives of patients.”
A new cycling option this year was the Virtual Ride. This gave people an opportunity to support research at The Ottawa Hospital by tracking their kilometres over the summer months. That’s what encouraged breast cancer survivor Pam Bechervaise to register. Since her diagnosis in 2014, she’s seen the advancements in treatment thanks to research at The Ottawa Hospital. “I know that if I do need it again, that [with the research being done] hopefully next time around there will be a cure.”
The Virtual Ride also inspired a group of cyclists from North Bay to take part in honour of a friend who died of cancer last December.
Among the hundreds cycling through the streets on Sunday was Kevin O’Shea, Mattamy Homes Division President. This marked the fourth year for Mattamy Homes as title sponsor for THE RIDE and O’Shea says it’s an incredible fundraiser to be a part of each year. “One of Mattamy’s core values is community and having a positive impact in the communities where we do business. Giving us the opportunity to participate in an event with a partner like The Ottawa Hospital, it makes total sense. It’s also a fun day to be out with friends and work colleagues.”
The Ottawa Hospital is one of Canada’s largest learning and research hospitals, with more than 1,100 beds, approximately 12,000 staff members and an annual budget of about $1.2 billion.
Our focus on learning and research helps us develop new and innovative ways to treat patients and improve care. As a multi-campus hospital affiliated with the University of Ottawa, we deliver specialized care to the Eastern Ontario region, but our techniques and research discoveries are adopted around the world. We engage the community at all levels to support our vision for better patient care.
From the compassion of our people to the relentless pursuit of new discoveries, The Ottawa Hospital never stops seeking solutions to the most complex health-care challenges. For more information about The Ottawa Hospital visit ohfoundation.ca.
